1. First, prepare for the job search:

Transition Assistance

• 210 High-demand Jobs:  Use the VRAP program (see above) to become competitive for these 210 jobs.

• Be a Hero Hire a Hero:  Career services for Wounded Warriors and enhanced employment opportunities.

• Careers4Vets:  AT&T employees give advice to transitioning servicemen and women on their job search.

• Military Benefits Report: A service that helps you uncover all the Federal, State, Local and Private benefits, services and programs that you are entitled to;  the process is 100% online, completely free and only takes a few minutes.

• Veterans’ Employment and Training Service: Resources and Expertise to Assist and Prepare Vets to Obtain Meaningful Careers, Maximize their Employment Opportunities, and Protect their Employment Rights.

• Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP):  Apply for up to 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans.

• Vet Success: Veterans Affairs transition resources.

Skills Translators

• Military Skills Translator:  Several different translators to help you build a competitive resume.

• My Next Move: Browse careers by industry and find civilian careers with similar skills as your military job!

2. Next, research what your salary should be for a specific job and region:

• Cost-of-Living Wizard:  How much do you need to earn as a civilian to have the same standard of living you had in the military?

• Glassdoor:  Estimate salary ranges for different jobs

• Vault:  Estimate salary ranges for different jobs

• Wage Data:  Research wages for different jobs and regions (Bureau of Labor and Statistics site).

• Employer Partnership: Job Search Support for Reservists and National Guard.  This is an Army Reserve site that lists all employers who have pledged to hire National Guard and Reservists.

• Hiring our Heroes: Find a job fair near you.

• Service Locator: One Stop Career Center nearest you, just add zip code.

Job Search Databases

• VA for Vets: Career-search tools for veterans seeking employment at the VA, career development services for veterans and coaching and reintegration support for military service members.

• Vetjobs: A searchable jobs database (connects vets with employers).

Company Research

• GI Job’s top 100 military-friendly employers

• Microsoft Job Openings: Enter your MOS or military background to display available job openings at Microsoft related to your background.

Industry-Specific Programs

Financial Services

• EJ Career:  Interested in becoming a financial advisor?

• Wall Street Warfighters:  Program for wounded warrior interested in financial services careers.

Construction

• Helmets To Hardhats:  Helps members of the Armed Services find careers in the construction industry.

Truck Driving

• Ryder:  The trucking industry in general has nearly 200,000 unfilled jobs for skilled truck drivers with commercial drivers licenses. Ryder Trucking is one company that is actively recruiting veterans on its website.

4. Dress the Part:

• Dress for Success:  Free professional clothes for women as well as a variety of career transitions services.

• Dignity you Wear: Providing work-appropriate clothing for veterans seeking employment and basic clothing necessities for those who have become homeless. Clothes are brand new!

• State Education Benefits:  Various benefits unique to each state.

• Federal Student Aid Resources: Apply for Federal student aid (if you still need financial assistance after the GI Bill’s benefits).

• National Resource Directory: A comprehensive directory for job search and transition services for vets.

• Dept. of Labor: Resources on benefits and compensation; education and training; employment; family and caregiver support; health; homeless assistance; housing; transportation and travel.

• Women Joining Forces: Mentor services for women.  Business and Professional Women (BPW) Foundation’s Joining Forces Mentoring Plus provides free resources, including mentors, subject matter experts (SMEs), and online connections for women veterans and military spouses to assist them in successfully obtaining meaningful employment and a successful career. They’re matching 10,000 mentors by the end of 2012.

• Give an Hour: Counseling services

• PTSD Coach:  PTSD Self-assessment, manage symptoms, find immediate support.  Great resource for active duty, veterans, and family/friends.

• The Mission Continues: You served your country. Now consider serving your country as a Fellow with The Mission Continues.

• Team Rubicon:  Veterans team with medical professionals to provide emergency response in crisis situations.
